How to Create a Goal Chain

Break a long-term commitment into sequential milestones. Stake once upfront and work through each sub-goal with your accountability partner.

What you'll learn

  • What a Goal Chain is and when to use it instead of a single goal
  • How to define chain details (title, start/end dates)
  • How to add sequential sub-goals with your own due dates
  • How to stake tokens for the whole chain
  • How to choose a partner and complete each milestone

Single Goal

Best for short-term commitments — things you want to achieve within a week.

Goal Chain You are here

Best for long-term commitments. A good rule of thumb is if the goal takes longer than a week, you can use a Goal Chain to break it into multiple sub-goals.

It is also useful for goals that are repeateble over a period of time. For instance, publishing one article per week or month.

1

Chain details

Fill in the chain-level fields:

  • Chain Title — e.g. “Publish one substack article per month for the next four months”
  • Description — what you're committing to over the full period
  • Start Date — when the first sub-goal begins
  • End Date — when the final sub-goal must be done

Fill in the chain title and dates, then click Next.

2

Add sub-goals

Define each milestone in the chain. Each sub-goal requires a title, success criteria (what evidence proves completion), and a due date.

Set the due date for each sub-goal yourself — pick whatever dates make sense for your pace. Sub-goals run in sequence: the second sub-goal activates once the first one is approved.

step2-sub-goals

Fill in the title, success criteria, and due date for each sub-goal. Add or remove rows before continuing.

You need at least 2 sub-goals. Each sub-goal must be due before the next one — the form enforces this. You cannot reorder sub-goals after creation.
3

Stake tokens

Set a token stake for each sub-goal individually — each card shows the sub-goal title, due date, and a number input. The minimum per sub-goal is 100 tokens. Your available balance is shown at the top.

All tokens are deducted from your balance immediately when you create the chain.

step3-stake-tokens

Set a stake per sub-goal. All tokens are deducted upfront when the chain is created.

4

Choose a partner

Choose an accountability partner from three tabs: Recommended, Search All, or Invite a Friend. The partner you choose will review evidence for every sub-goal in the chain.

step4-partner-selection

Choose a partner who will review evidence for every sub-goal in the chain.

Working through sub-goals

Once your partner accepts, the first sub-goal becomes active. Work through each sub-goal the same way as a single goal:

  1. 1Complete the work defined in the sub-goal.
  2. 2Submit evidence from the goal detail page.
  3. 3Your partner reviews and approves.
  4. 4The next sub-goal unlocks automatically.

The chain detail page shows which sub-goal is currently active.

Each sub-goal follows the same evidence submission and partner review process described in the Single Goal guide.

Message your partner

At any point during the chain, you can message your partner directly from the goal page. Open the active sub-goal and scroll to the Messages section. Use this to share progress updates, ask questions, or provide context before submitting evidence.

Keep all communication in the app so both sides have a shared record across every sub-goal in the chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a Goal Chain different from a Single Goal?+

A chain breaks one long-term goal into ordered milestones. Sub-goals unlock one at a time; you stake once for the whole chain upfront.

Can I add sub-goals after the chain starts?+

No. Sub-goals are defined during creation and cannot be added or removed once the chain is active.

What happens if I fail a sub-goal?+

Only that sub-goal's staked tokens are locked (same 80/10/10 distribution as a single goal failure). The chain continues — the next sub-goal activates automatically regardless.

Is the full token stake deducted upfront?+

Yes. You set a stake amount per sub-goal during creation and all tokens are deducted from your balance immediately, before the chain starts.

Can I use a different partner for different sub-goals?+

No. One partner oversees the entire chain.
